And if you do, you can turn to the person stood next to you and ask THEM… ‘What do YOU fancy for the 2.30?’ – Racing folks are renowned for their friendliness, they’ll tell you.

And then you can ask why.

And then you can ask what they think of one of the other horses… or ask them where the bar is.

And if you DO have a tumbleweed moment in the conversation, then odds on it’s time for another race anyway, they run every half hour or so. And if in the meantime you are at a loss for something to do, involve yourself in the Circuit Ritual… Everyone else does!

You can get as involved as you want, even reading what is effectively a ‘Beginner’s Guide to Horseracing’ before you go. We’ve got a ton of stuff to help you do your swotting up, if that’s what you want to do.

Or you can just enjoy the day out.

Three quarters of the people who go racing every year are ‘Social Racegoers’ – which means that they go for the parties, the events and the fun of it. They aren’t core racing fans (although a lot of them become fans as they get more involved) and they don’t have in depth knowledge of Horse Racing, they simply go because it’s fun.

They go for business, they go for get togethers with their friends and family and they go for dates.

The thing about racing is that the structure of it could have been made for a first date.

It’s safe. It’s public. It’s during the day or in the evening depending on which meeting you attend. There are 61 racecourses all over Britain, so you’ll not be far from the closest. Or if you are travelling to meet up with your paramour, there’s going to be one near them too! It’s got something for everyone, speed, fashion, a clock tower to meet under if you get lost…

It’s easy to talk about. It’s SO easy to talk about.

And everyone knows that it’s not quite as easy as it should be to find that person.

It used to be simple, you’d either grow up and marry the only person you weren’t related to in the village, or your parents would find you a suitable spouse, based on socioeconomic and practical circumstances. Which worked… to an extent.

But the world has moved on since then and life is no longer quite as simple as it once was.

Now we have CHOICE. We have OPTIONS. We are bombarded by ‘You should be doing this’, and ‘Anyone with a brain would be enjoying that’ and there are a set of standards that modern life expects us to live up to if we want to take part in its society.

Careers, moving out of the family home and modern life in general mean that finding a partner is not always as easy as it says in the instruction booklet.

And then if you DO meet someone, how do you make sure you don’t blow it? Supposedly the way to abiding love and domestic bliss is paved with common interests.

But what if you are interested in Warcraft and your soulmate is interested in Needlecraft… never the twain shall meet.
